Technology-related professions are male-dominated: only about 20% of technology graduates and specialist professionals are women. At the moment, in the European Union - and Portugal is no exception - the % of girls in higher education courses related to ICT is only 17%. Blockchain, cryptocurrencies, smart contracts are not attracting women to professional areas that are intended for the future and with a relevant salary return, since women remain heavily underrepresented both in these areas and in the leadership of these projects.

All of this has an impact on society, not just on the female population: the European Parliament Resolution of 28 April 2016 on gender equality and women’s autonomy in the digital age states that “more women in technology could translate into an annual increase of around EUR 9 billion in the European Union's GDP.
